Livestock Express

Livestock Express is the world’s largest provider of premium livestock tonnage with almost 60 years’ experience. Our modern, purpose-built fleet of livestock carriers transports between 600,000 and 750,000 head of livestock on an annual basis. Animals transported include cattle, sheep, horses and goats. Our daily focus and target is to provide safe and reliable services, meeting and exceeding the highest animal-welfare standards.
A dedicated fleet of vessels is operated by a highly qualified and skilled crew pool, with extensive livestock-handling experience. Commercial and technical management, vessel operations, crewing and QHSE tasks are carried out in house by Livestock Express teams in the Netherlands and Singapore.

Trade lanes

Livestock Express operates worldwide, with a strong presence in markets such as Australia, New Zealand, USA, Portugal and Ireland, where a strict regulatory and enforcement framework is in place for livestock carriers. Our vessels are ideal for long-haul voyages, not only from the aforementioned markets, but also from South America to China, South East Asia and the Gulf, where their quality, design and additional features are particularly suitable to ensuring good animal-welfare outcomes. We provide our clients the assurance that their livestock is taken care of to the highest animal-welfare standards.

Fleet

Livestock Express is proud to be the main pioneer in the development of modern livestock carriers. Fewer than 20 purpose-built livestock vessels have entered the worldwide fleet throughout history, of which 13 were designed and built for Livestock Express. A multiple-year fleet-renewal programme started in 2013 and was completed in 2016 with the delivery of Gudali Express, the seventh G-class vessel to be constructed for the Company. These next-generation revolutionary vessels were built with the welfare of their livestock cargoes at the centre of their design, boasting animal-welfare features to the highest level.

Next-generation revolutionary vessels

  • Hull design and COMFORT rating

The wave-piercing bow design ensures maximum comfort for both livestock and crew, whilst maintaining high speeds. With this unique design, Livestock Express was able to obtain a COMFORT-rating for its vessels; a notation acknowledging the level of comfort on a ship (i.e. vibration/noise/motion) that was previously only awarded to cruise liners.

  • Cargo-hold design

Optimal pen arrangements, based on our 50 years of experience in the transportation of livestock, guarantee smooth loading and discharging. The implementation of longer rather than deeper pens provides all livestock easy and constant access to water and fodder.

  • Power redundancy and monitoring systems

Increased generator capacity ensures our vessels have more power redundancy than any other livestock vessels in the market, ensuring livestock services remain fully operational in the event of any mechanical failure. Advanced monitoring and alarm systems are in place for all critical equipment, such as the desalination-plants (i.e. salinity alarms that ensure non-compliant fresh water is automatically pumped to a separate tank) and ventilation (i.e. a fan failure is reported and any reduction in ventilation power is automatically compensated by other fans until the matter is resolved). Closed-circuit television is in place in the cargo holds, providing the crew with an additional tool to monitor the livestock.

  • Ducted ventilation

    Ducted ventilation

A ducted ventilation system focussing on air delivery, rather than air flow alone, provides each individual pen with fresh air that is directed to the skin surface where most heat is generated from the livestock. Ducted ventilation is scientifically proven to make better use of the air’s capacity to remove heat, water vapour, moisture and noxious gases. Our ventilation system is considered best in class, exceeding Australia’s world-leading regulatory requirements for air flow and air changes, while at the same time significantly reducing noise levels in the holds.
